About Calypso Sports & Fitness
Our Mission -
Deliver an enjoyable & challenging exercise experience that gives young people the confidence and ability to achieve their goals; both in sports performance and a healthy lifestyle.
Calypso Defined -
To go calypso means to push the boundaries of convention and do the things we often think about but avoid doing because of some fear or hesitation within us. It’s to explore possibility without limitations, removing the fear of failure and focussing on the potential reward that comes with doing something great. A Calypso approach is not one of complete unpredictability, but one that allows for natural, honest expression of oneself in a given situation.
Our Training Philosophy is founded on the notion that all people are born athletes and the challenge is for children to remain athletes as they grow up. The five statements that define and encompass this notion are Stimulation; Challenge, Discovery; Enjoyment; and Confidence. It is our goal for these five beliefs to underpin every program Calypso Sports & Fitness offers.
Who is Calypso Sports & Fitness for?
Our programmes are for everyone!!! Talented athletes will be exposed to new, advanced and challenging exercises that aren’t received in their sport-specific trainings. Less competitive kids will benefit from a friendly, positive and encouraging exercise environment that doesn’t have the constraints of a traditional, structured sport-specific training.
Benefits to all Calypso members include:
- Improved fitness
- Greater athletic ability
- Improved sports performance
- More injury resistant
- Increased confidence
- Greater knowledge and understanding of exercise
- Peer interaction
How does Calypso Sports & Fitness work?
Calypso is NOT a gym!!
We run group fitness classes for young people aged 8 – 18 years.
These sessions involve a variety of activities to develop all-round athleticism, including aspects of strength, speed, coordination, flexibility, with games & challenges and an emphasis on FUN.
Based on your age, experience & goals, we place you in the appropriate group: LEAP 1, LEAP 2, FYT 1, FYT 2, or FYT 3.
For each of these groups we offer at least four classes per week, and you book in advance into the classes you choose.
Each class starts promptly on the specified time and runs for 50 minutes.
Membership options:
Our monthly membership enables you to attend as many classes of your level as you like within the month, making this a great value choice.
Or you can buy blocks of 6 or 12 classes which can be used anytime within 4 months of the purchase date. This is a good option for members who are unable to attend as frequently.
Programme Descriptions
Learn, Exercise & Play (LEAP)
Set your child on track for a life of health, physical activity and adventure.
Calypso’s LEAP programme for 8-12 year olds teaches quality of movement and enjoyment of exercise in a fun, active, and stimulating setting.
It is important for this age group to develop healthy habits to carry them into an active lifestyle in their teens, plus learn the variety of skills and fitness foundations necessary to prepare them for the rigours of competitive sport.
Functional Youth Training (FYT)
Provide your teen with a training experience that is challenging, fun, and appropriate for their age and development.
Calypso’s FYT system offers 12-18 year olds the most comprehensive youth fitness and conditioning programme in the country today.
FYT builds on our LEAP programme principles with further activities and challenges, and a particular emphasis on functional and relevant training activities. Developing well rounded young athletes, FYT is a great transition from childhood play into adult sports and fitness training programmes.
With challenging and rewarding classes run by passionate and knowledgeable fitness coaches, Calypso Sports & Fitness will motivate and inspire your child while improving their overall athletic ability, general fitness, enjoyment of exercise, and most importantly – confidence!
Calypso’s Founders
Gareth and Leigh Ashton are a husband and wife team who thrive on helping young people achieve their fitness, sporting and health goals.
After both graduating in 2004 with their bachelors’ degrees in Sport & Recreation, they joined forces personally, but went their separate ways professionally: Leigh to the Millennium Institute of Sport & Health and Gareth into part time sales and freelance coaching. Fast forward to 2009, and now with literally thousands of coaching sessions and presentations between them, from young athletes through to professionals in a variety of sports and countries, they reunite to bring you Calypso Sports & Fitness – New Zealand’s only dedicated youth fitness and training centre.
From being a member of the Fitness NZ Expert Panel writing Children in Exercise Facilities Guidelines, to serving on the International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA) Advisory Committee, Leigh brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this new and exciting venture.
As NZ’s first qualified Youth Conditioning Specialist through the IYCA, combined with his innovative and progressive programming style, Gareth thrives on the opportunity of creating the most challenging, exciting and informative coaching sessions around today.
Gareth and Leigh are both super passionate about youth sports and fitness and can’t wait to help your child enjoy the benefits of increased physical activity and improved sports performance.
